You just started downloading a large file and found that the download will take a long time to complete. You don’t have a slow Internet connection: trivially, the download is not done at full bandwidth, which bothers you a bit. I understand: that it is a situation we have all experienced at least once.
For this reason, I will show you how to download faster what you are interested in, whether you want to perform this operation from a PC, console, or smartphone. There are many variables at play, and finding what acts as a “bottleneck” to the download may not be exactly simple. Still, here I will deepen all the “classic” issues that usually many users encounter.
Tips to download faster
Before going into the details of the software and specific operations to understand how to download faster, I would like to give you some “general” advice that usually helps improve the connection’s download performance.
If you have not already done so, these are routine operations that you may want to put in place before trying the ways that I will indicate later, a little more specific.
Through these indications you will understand if the slow download is due to your Internet connection or an incorrect configuration. You can also remove any “bottlenecks” based on poor download performance.
- Speed test: To verify your internet connection is working properly, you may want to check the download speed first. You can do it all safely using Ookla’s Speedtest tool. But the only speed test in Italy is Ne.Me.Sys by AGCOM. You may want to investigate the matter with my tutorial on how to check the speed of the fiber (also valid for ADSL connections or other technologies)
- Wi-Fi channel: An issue that could affect the performance of your Internet connection is the “congestion” of the Wi-Fi channel. Put simply, if too many devices are connected, for example, to the classic 2.4GHz frequency, you may also experience drops in terms of download speed. For this reason, I recommend you check out my tutorials on changing the Wi-Fi channel and connecting to 5GHz.
- Distance from the router and type of connection: Other factors that can affect the speed of your Internet connection are how far the device you are using is from the router and the type of connection used. If by carrying out a speed test near the router, for example, with the smartphone, you detect very different values than those you find, for example, on the PC, it may mean that the Wi-Fi network does not reach the room properly. Where the terminal is located. You may want to connect via an Ethernet cable or set up an extended mesh network to solve this. You may also want to learn more about my guide on how the Powerline works.
There could be many other issues involved, such as poor Wi-Fi card performance , DNS in use, using an improperly configured VPN, or a technical glitch, but generally, the quick steps I’ve just listed are those which can create the greatest problems in this context. For the rest, if you have not yet solved your problems, in the continuation of the tutorial, I will indicate other possibilities that could provide you with good satisfaction.
How to download faster from a PC
Since you are wondering how to download some files faster, I think starting with the PC question is right. There is a good chance that you want to do everything from this platform. Well, the programs below can help you in your intent, as they use various types of systems related to file sharing. There are generally quicker and less quick methods to make a particular download. I can’t give you specific indications for your case, as there are so many variables at play, but delving into the possibilities listed below could allow you to reach your goal.
qBittorrent (Windows / macOS / Linux)
If you ask yourself, “How can I make a file download faster” I suggest you go to the BitTorrent network.
The latter is a popular peer-to-peer network for exchanging data online and is one of the fastest ways to download files hosted on it. It must be said, however, that since it is a peer-to-peer network, the data download speed depends on the users who share them (if a file has few sources and sources with slow connections, the download will be slow).
To take advantage of BitTorrent, you need a special program: there are many, but I advise you to use one. It is qBittorrent, as it is free, multi-platform (available for Windows, macOS, and Linux), open source, and free of advertising or promotional software.
To download the latter, just go to the BitTorrent website and click on the link for the platform you are interested in, for example, 32-bit & 64-bit installers (for Windows) or DMG (for macOS).
Once you have selected the program version to download, on Windows file. Simply open the latter and press the Yes, Ok, and Next buttons in succession, then place the check mark concerning the item I accept the license conditions. To conclude the procedure, you just have to press the Next buttons twice consecutively, Install and Close .qbittorrent_xx_setup.exe
On Mac, on the other hand, you just need to open the DMG file and drag the qBittorrent icon into the Applications folder.
